They’re stuck, Joe. You can watch it every night on TV, see it on their faces every night on the Tageschau or elsewhere. On the one hand you can see that they’re simply speechless (the hords of German Gutmenschen), they just can’t believe that he’s actually turned out to be what he is. On the other hand they still react reflexively, “the way they should,” defending him against those standard evil forces out there (the usual right-wing suspects) trying to “get him” or make it hard for him, etc. That he himself is entirely responsible for “the situation” (not the guy from Jersey Shore) is simply not an option here, at least no one can say it openly. You just won’t find a “proper” left-leaning German who will stand up and tell it like it really is. Germans don’t like to stand up like that. They don’t have a Jon Stewart here, in other words.

Obama seems to view himself as a tragic hero – a Prometheus who sacrifices himself to bring fire and light to a benighted humanity. n He would be better described as a “pathetic hero”. Yes, the outcome is tragic, but LOOK at the damned fool.
