You got your values, then you got your interests. Then you have the value of your interests. Then you have the interest you get on the value of those interests.
So, in other words, always look after your own interests if you want good value.

I think the ends justify the means, idealism serves no one because we live in an imperfect world.
The good that China is doing in trying to pull her people out of poverty is noble. It is very unfortunate that some of the side effects of her endeavours are human rights violations, environmental damage etc. If one were to look at things from China’s persepective instead of one’s own interest, then China becomes a less scary beast. I think it is unfortunate that very many people have lost sight of that.
