Before the planned protest demonstration by farmers at the Brandenburg Gate, participants with their tractors headed toward Berlin city center on Monday morning. Loud honking could be heard in several parts of the city in the early morning hours and also during the night.

Starting tomorrow, farmers all over Germany will be taking to the barricades to demonstrate against the government’s (subvention-cutting) policy. Expected are highway blockades, rallies, protest camps and rallies all over the country. The farmers’ association expects “tens of thousands of tractors” to take part.

Deputy chancellor and economy minister Robert Habeck was on his way back from the island of Hooge on Thursday night when he faced a group of about 250-300 farmers at Schlüttsiel harbour, near the border with Denmark. They had gathered to protest against a recent government decision to slash agricultural subsidies.
“What I’m really worried about is how heated up the atmosphere in the country is becoming,” he added. “The right to protest in Germany is a precious asset. Coercion and violence destroy this asset.”
They’re not cooperating. With well-meaning German government efforts to save Planet Earth as we know it, I mean.
They say they’re fed up with government interference and brought out hundreds of tractors to block the streets of Berlin and several other cities in northern Germany this weekend, the culmination of months of protests to coincide with the start of International Green Week — a major agriculture and food fair in the German capital.
Why do these farmers insist on wanting to continue to make a decent living while feeding everybody else? It’s just not fair. They simply don’t understand that the governement – coming out with the next wave of new government regulations restricting the use of fertilizer, manure and insecticides, etc. – is, well, here from the government and they’re here to help.
“Over-regulation is the last thing we need.”
And twisted an ankle or something.
And this German Bauernregel (farmer or folk saying) doesn’t sound very promising, either: „Wie das Wetter um den Frühlingsanfang, so hält es sich den ganzen Sommer lang.” As the weather begins in spring, all through the summer will be the same thing. Dumb-ass farmers.
