Oh, the horror.

It sure is a good thing that German businesses are never run that way.

Ryanair to shut Berlin base as it blames rise in German aviation tax – Trade union criticises airline’s plan to halve passenger numbers to the city as ‘purely profit-oriented…’

“German aviation is broken. The government admits that it is uncompetitive, yet there is no strategy to cut aviation taxes or high airport fees – despite Ryanair warning that Germany would lose traffic, connectivity, jobs and trade.

“Since 2019, Ryanair has been forced to close its bases in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart … in addition to stopping all flights to Dresden, Leipzig and Dortmund.” It said the closures had led to the loss of 13 aircraft from those bases.

The German trade union Verdi criticised Ryanair’s plans as a “purely profit-oriented corporate strategy”.

Budget startup Norse Atlantic Airways adds 2 US routes to Berlin – A week before its eagerly-anticipated launch, Norse Atlantic Airways is announcing a new destination to add to its growing route map.

The Norwegian ultra-low-cost long-haul airline will launch flights from the German capital’s new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)…

Daily service between BER and JFK begins on Aug. 17 with one-way introductory fares of $120. Thrice-weekly service between BER and LAX begins on Aug. 19 with one-way introductory fares of $138.

* Some might translate it as Cheepnis is what I want.

We’re Only Taxing You For Your Own Good

To protect the climate. And while we’re at it we’ll tax you Americans even more.

A “departure tax?” Then I’ll just stay here. Germany’s Air Transport Tax – somehow meant to save the climate but no one can explain to me just how this works – is penalizing American carriers by taxing them the maximum amount of 45 euros per passenger.

These carriers are now suing the country on the grounds that “Germany cannot arbitrarily close its budget gap on the backs of US airlines and their passengers, who already pay taxes at excessive rates. This is a short-sighted cash grab.”

Of course it is. But they’re going to keep on taxing us anyway. Americans don’t vote here.
