There Does Bear A Certain Resemblance

I always knew that I never liked George Clooney and I thought I knew why (he makes such lousy movies), but this latest comment of his has made me reevaluate my opinion.

He announced that he would like to play the role of Angela Merkel, if anybody would ever offer it to him, because “I‘ve always wanted to be like a small German woman.”

No, I don’t know what that was supposed to mean, either.

And no, it’s not just his films anymore, nor his boring pacifism and human rights concerns or his inane and poorly acted political morality made in Hollywood that gets my goat this time, it’s the fact that he clearly wants to dress up like a woman (albeit as one who wears pant suits all the time) and just doesn’t have the guts to do so.

And here I thought the guy prided himself in having a little integrity. Puh-shaw.

Damned If You Don’t

Remember long, long ago when the US messed up so awfully and needed so desperately to get out of Iraq as soon as possible (I’m talking the German view here, folks)?

Well, now the big American mistake is that they just left. Everything is falling apart again already and it’s all our fault, again already.

The Germans should know what they’re talking about here this time, though. US troops are still in their country and have been since 1945.

Kaum haben die letzten US-Truppen den Irak verlassen, brechen im Land alte Konflikte auf.

Our 9/11?

My, what a gross exaggeration. A handfull of neo-Nazi slobs go on a killing spree and a Berlin Politologe (political scientist) calls this Germany’s equivalent to the attacks of 9/11?

This surely must be a bad political scientist (as in bad science). But he’s not alone, of course. Germany’s contact to/with reality has never been all that steady, even in the best of times (like now), so none of this should be a surprise. It does make me wonder though about what would happen if something – how should I put it? – “real” were ever to happen here. I mean, if this is Germany’s 9/11, what would happen if a real 9/11 came along? Would everybody just pop into thin air or something? Nah, that would be impossible. Not even bad science can do that

“Das ist unser 9/11.”

The Brown Army Faction

Get it?

It’s paranoia time. All you need are three or four slobs with weapons (supposedly so well controlled by the state), lots of truly criminal energy and a huge government network of giant law enforcement and security agencies clearly incapable of even knowing that this group exists or what it has been doing for the past 13 years (more effective government control in action) and you’ve got all that you need to turn these killings into a massive, shadowy consipiracy of neo-Nazi sympathizers active throughout said law enforcement and security agencies bent on helping this group and those like them in overthrowing civilized democratic society as we know it.

And all of this has to take place in Germany too, of course. Oh, and I forgot. You also need a big honkin’ fear industry media machine that makes money by selling pre-packaged products like this.

No, “the government” isn’t conspiring with anybody here. It’s just being inefficient, as usual. And the more the government, the more the inefficiency, as usual. So what’s the answer? Why, more government, of course.

“Ging denn bei niemandem die rote Lampe an?”

Referendum For Referendum On Referendum Called

It’s getting ugly here, folks. Ugly and angry (and that makes everybody happy here).

“We’ve had enough!” Germany’s Bildzeitung readers read. “We’re spending hundreds of billions of euros to save the Greeks and now a referendum there should make clear whether they want to be saved at all. Now we want our own referendum: no more billions for the Greeks, Greece out of the euro!”

Place your vote here: “Yes, keep throwing money at them!” or “No, not another cent for bankrupt Greece, take the euro away!”

Dumb Broad Talking

Or was it Dead Man Walking?

A favorite tactic of left-wing wanna-be moralists everywhere (and of those flashy Hollywood types in particular), fading actress-with-a-cause-but-I-forget-which-one-it-is-this-week Susan Sarandon successfully boosted relations with her public and her vaunted sense of self by tossing around Nazi analogies at Pope Benedict XVI over the weekend. The current Pope is German, you see. And old. Get it?

And being a good Catholic girl who played a well-known nun in a film called Dead Man Walking way back when in 1995, when Christ was a corporal, she certainly shows that she knows what she is not talking about (knows what she is not talking about?).

Some, however, believe that she might actually be “ignorant” of lots and lots of things, which can’t really be though, can it?

“No, the last one. Not this Susan Sarandon we have now.”

Anti-War Bombs Real Duds

All we are saying, is give peace a chance (or we’ll burn your asses up).

German peacenik activist types protesting Germany’s so-called military engagement in Afghanistan just attempted an arson attack at the north end of one of Berlin Hauptbahnhof’s tunnels (the high-speed link to Hamburg).

Railway employees discovered the device in time and experts secured “seven bottles filled with flammable liquid bundled together and linked to a fuse.”

Peace now or we’ll kill you? How refreshing or something. There is a certain logic here somewhere, I’m sure. I just haven’t found it yet.

The “Hekla Reception Committee — Initiative for more Eruptions in Society” — in an apparent reference to Iceland’s Hekla volcano — claimed responsibility.

More German Goodwill

On a day like today, it’s the thought that counts.

And here is a little summary of what politically correct thinking German intelectuals have to, uh, “think” about the subject (as if you didn’t know already). You might not be able to stomach reading the whole article so I thought a summary would be in order. Some of these observations are really hilarious, by the way, which is kind of inappropriate considering the occasion, but still. So ab geht die Post (here we go)!

This is Bush’s tragic legacy.

9/11 triggered America’s “decline.”

The American superpower has lost the goodwill “the world” gave it after the attacks.

America is now seen as a perpetrator of violence itself (not as a victim, like Germany, for instance).

Before the attacks, America was in full bloom — like Rome at its peak (that comparison with Rome is one of their absolute favorites, as you know — decline, get it?).

America is trapped in Iraq, Afghanistan and in Pakistan (trapped in an embrace with Pakistan?).

“America can no longer even mourn its victims properly because Americans have long been not just victims, but also perpetrators.”

America is a country at war with itself because five percent of Americans buy almost 40 percent of all consumer goods sold in the country (and that’s not even counting what they shoplift).

America has become distrustful, fearful and defensive — against Muslims (who would have thought that? — that could never happen in Germany).

Citizen militias hunt down illegal immigrants.

Americans can still not accept having a black president in the White House.

As to “American exceptionalism,” many things in America are only exceptional because they are exceptionally bad.

The US has become estranged from the rest of the world.

Americans cheered spontaneously on the streets when they heard the news (of bin Laden’s death).

Because of this, the sins of the original victim were brought into focus — America’s sins.

The superpower has only itself to blame.

Have a sad 9/11!

Burning Booming in Berlin

Ah, Berlin. Poor but sexy. And now partly on fire every night.

“The enthusiasm about Berlin as the capital of alternative culture has never been as great as it is these days. EasyJet tourism is booming, as is the real estate market — prices may be rising in Berlin, but beer and apartments are still relatively cheap.”

As are lighting fluid and matches.

Rot-Rot hat Brandstiftern zu lange zugeschaut.
