You First

A spokesman for Angela Merkel’s government has announced that he expects coronavirus vaccinations to begin in Germany “in the very first days” of the new year.

And Germans being Germans and incredibly orderly and all that the same spokesman has indicated that government officials, himself included, will graciously wait their turn and let everyone else get their vaccinations first.

Merkel’s chief of staff, Helge Braun, told the Bild newspaper late Sunday that he will tell medical authorities he’s prepared to help. He said “that won’t work at every hour of the day or night as chief of staff, but at the weekend I’m prepared to join in.” He said that he and Merkel will get vaccinated “when it’s our turn.”

Just Do As The Germans Do And Everything Will Be Fine

COVID-19-wise. It’s good to be the Klassenbeste (top of the class).

Covid

Sure, the number of infections keeps climbing here but at least the German populice is doing as it is told = everything right.

Germany Passes 1 Million Coronavirus Cases As Merkel Warns Of ‘A Tough Winter’ – Germany officially passed 1 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Friday as the country’s daily totals remain high through the first month of what the government calls “lockdown light.” Since the beginning of November, schools and most shops have remained open, but bars, gyms and other indoor leisure centers have closed, with restaurants only open for takeaway orders.

On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the country will have to live with these restrictions through at least Dec. 20.

German Of The Day: Groß

We spell it gross. That means big. Not gross. You know, our gross, as in “a gross exaggeration?”

Merz

That’s what’s calling Friedrich Merz “Germany’s Donald Trump” certainly is. A “hardline conservative” in Germany is a liberal light in US-Amerika.

But having said that, when I read from our friends over at Politico about “A combative old white man who speaks of gays and pedophiles in the same breath, dismisses gender debates as a waste of time and who can’t stand Angela Merkel could hardly be more out of step with the zeitgeist,” I ask myself, what’s not to like about this guy?

Journalists Fascinated By Rare VW Kamikaze Attack

No one was injured in the attack, of course. Nor was the VW used in the attack damaged.

Car

This was a German kamikaze attack, after all.

Germany: Car crashes into gates of Angela Merkel’s chancellery – Berlin police have arrested a man who drove his car into the gates of the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. A vehicle with the same license plates carried out a similar stunt in 2014.

Photos showed a car with a message scrawled on one of its sides reading: “You damned children and old people murderers.” The white paint on the other side said: “Stop Globalization Politics.”

German Restrictions Re-Restricted For More Regulated And Restrictive Restriction

She’s from the government and she’s here to help.

Masks

The first batch of COVID-19 restrictions worked wonders in Germany. That’s why they introduced a tighter set of restrictions a few months later. And these were so popular (with the German government) that said government is going to re-restrict these restrictions to an even more restrictive level. A special Christmas bonus restriction track is in the works now too, I assume.

Coronavirus: Merkel, German states consider tougher restrictions – Germany’s federal government and states are considering tighter COVID-19 restrictions, such as dramatically reducing the number of people at private gatherings and compulsory mask wearing for school students.

Keep Wearing Those Masks, Germany

They’re working wonders. During your second lockdown “light.”

Surge

German Covid Cases in ICU Hit Record as Pandemic Intensifies – Germany has more severe Covid-19 patients than at any point since the pandemic began, underscoring the urgency facing authorities to contain the disease.

Europe’s largest economy had 2,978 people being treated for the coronavirus in intensive care facilities on Monday, exceeding the previous peak of 2,933 on April 18, according to the DIVI register of German ICU capacity.

Even The German Public Is Starting To Get It

On the one hand, as the Washington Post itself put it: “Germany and France announce new national lockdowns, saying they have lost control of the coronavirus.”

Corona

On the other hand, the German government, for its part, still pretends that it has the situation under control and is trying desperately to prove this to the German public by introducing ever more restrictive measures. Das Chaos ist perfekt, in other words. Everything is perfectly chaotic.

German hostility to Merkel’s coronavirus shutdown grows – Chancellor Angela Merkel and Germany’s 16 state premiers spent four hours deliberating before announcing drastic measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The question now is how the Germans will react.

If Only The United States Could Get Covid Under Control Like The Europeans Have

Not, I mean. Take Germany, for example. Please.

Covid

Despite doing everything right (just ask the government, they’ll tell you they have) Angela Merkel is now considering a “lockdown light.”

Global report: Merkel says Germany faces ‘difficult months ahead’ in Covid fight – Chancellor says country is on verge of losing control as Europe death toll passes 250k.

“We are seeing very, very high positivity rates and an increasing lack of capacity to do any effective form of contact tracing, which is going to further drive the disease into darkness.”

But Everybody’s Wearing Masks Here Already

And the masks work, right? So why does the number of COVID-19 infections in Germany keep rising?

Masks

Coronavirus in Germany: Angela Merkel urges people to stay home ‘whenever possible’ – Angela Merkel has called for solidarity as Germany enters a “very serious phase” of the pandemic. Germany has again set a new daily case record, as ministers call for thousands of additional contact tracers.

“The comparatively relaxed summer is over; now we are facing difficult months. How winter will be, how our Christmas will be, will be decided in the coming days and weeks.”

Germany Tough Now On China?

Sure they are. And I’ve got some swamp land in Florida I can offer you for next to nothing.

China

The Germans are bought and they know it.

Merkel’s China Reset Is Mostly Hollow – As the engine of German export growth, the destination of $100 billion worth of German goods last year, and Germany’s biggest overall trading partner, China is not just a large and profitable market. Germans see China as the mechanism for sustaining the only prolonged era of domestic harmony their country has ever known.
