Insurrection, German style

Boy oh boy. that was one close call for German democracy itself.

Or something. Yawn. This “coup” is so embarrassing it’s cute. A cute coup. It’s kind of like US-Amerika‘s January 6, only dopier. If you can imagine that.

Germany coup plot trial begins amid high security – Self-styled Prince Heinrich XIII among alleged ringleaders of plan for violent overthrow of state…

A total of 26 people are on trial – a 27th, a man in his 70s, died recently in hospital in Frankfurt – and the three cases are expected to go on for a year or more. Gundula Fehns-Böer, a spokesperson for Frankfurt’s regional court, said: “It’s a challenge for us all, but we’ll sit here for as long as we have to sit.”

The alleged plotters were arrested in December 2022, when heavily armed forces stormed houses, flats, offices and a remote hunting lodge. Investigators had surveilled the group in the previous few months. Among the arrests made were a leading member of the QAnon conspiracy theory organisation, a clairvoyant, a dentist and an amateur pilot.

German of the day: Büroschlaf ist am gesündesten

That means sleeping in the office is the most healthy kind of sleep.

Have the Germans become lazy at work?

Germans have long been known for their diligence, sense of duty, reliability and productivity. Recent data suggests that Germans are working fewer hours. But that doesn’t tell the whole story.

A glance at current OECD labor figures can be startling. In 2022, the average American worked over 1,800 hours per year, while the average German worked only 1,340 hours. However, labor market researcher Enzo Weber from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany, dismisses suggestions of the once-industrious Germans now only wanting to enjoy their sweet lives.

“Germany has a very high female labor force participation rate compared to most other countries,” Weber told DW, noting that the main difference to other countries was that about every second woman works part-time, which mathematically lowers the average annual working hours.

No, he didn’t

He didn’t “intentionally use a banned Nazi slogan.”

If you watched the clip, and were fair in your judgement, you would agree. If you want to say the words “everything for Germany” is a Nazi slogan you can, of course (they used it), but something tells me uttering these words didn’t originate with them, nor are they the exclusive property of Adolf Hitler & Co.

You don’t have to like this guy or his politics or his political party to see that “the system” is out to get him (and them). The court system has been weaponized here, in other words. Boy oh boy it sure is good to know that that type of thing could never happen in US-Amerika, right?

German far-right leader intentionally used banned Nazi slogan, court rules – Alternative for Germany politician Björn Höcke was fined for uttering a phrase employed by Hitler’s storm troopers.

A leading politician for the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD) has been convicted by a German court of using a banned Nazi slogan — a decision that is unlikely to dissuade the party’s core supporters in its eastern strongholds.

Björn Höcke, who heads the AfD in the eastern German state of Thuringia, was fined €13,000 for closing a 2021 campaign speech with the phrase: “Everything for Germany!”

Did someone finally give the German media Brain Police a wake-up pill?

Or are they finally figuring out where the real danger (and exploitable fear) lies?

A German dilemma: Everybody here knows what everybody here is really worried about but the only ones openly saying it are the evil “Nazi” AfD party. It’s called painting yourself into a corner.

Germans fear migration more than climate change, study finds – Europeans — especially Germans — are increasingly keen on curbing immigration and are less focused on climate change, according to a study by a Danish-based think tank.

In a word, “no”

Or nein, if you prefer.

Another Green daydream comes to its inevitable end. Sheesh. German Greens don’t even know what country they live in.

Germany’s Autobahn — finally time for a speed limit?

The majority of Germans want a motorway speed limit, and environmental groups say it would help cut emissions. But are their arguments strong enough to convince those opposed to slower speeds on the Autobahn?

PS: A limit of 120 MILES per hour (image) might fly, but I doubt it.

But why would you leave Helsinki in the first place?

To come to Berlin, I mean.

Finns are the happiest people on Earth, I’m told. Germans, well, aren’t. And Berliners erst recht nicht (certainly not).

Traveling from Berlin to Helsinki — without using a plane. Flying is a major CO2 emitter when traveling. But how feasible are alternative modes of transportation?

Berlin Airlift 2.0

Only now it’s time for some really heavy airlifting.

Botswana offers 20,000 elephants to Germany in diplomatic spat over trophy hunting – Botswana’s president challenged Berlin to take on 20,000 elephants – saying “it’s not a joke” – while opposing Germany’s proposed restrictions on the import of hunting trophies.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi suggested in an interview with German newspaper Bild that Berlin should try living with elephants to experience the challenges the endangered species bring to the community.

Mr Masisi was responding to Germany’s environment ministry suggesting earlier this year that there should be tougher rules against importing hunting trophies.

Botswana’s president said Germans should “live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to”.

German of the day: Die Schnauze voll haben

Having the snout full means to be fed up with it, to be sick to death of it.

And the German Greens are filling up everybody’s snouts these days.

Germans Fed Up With Greens as Founding Member Resigns – The aggressive policies of the German Greens have alienated not only many voters in Germany but also their own supporters, including one of the founders of the party who has accused them of pursuing a warmongering foreign policy…

Annalena Baerbock, the young, inexperienced minister of foreign affairs, has promised to introduce a ‘feminist foreign policy,’ but she seems helpless in the face of the momentous challenges posed by the Russian-Ukraine war. The Greens have converted from a ‘pacifist’ party into the most belligerent party of all.

Breaking News: Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah are now right-wing white supremacists

And I’m not even going to get into the patriarchy part. Old Testament prophets go home!

You can’t make this stuff up, people.

‘We are dealing with fundamentalist rightwingers’: Berlin statues are latest battleground in Germany’s culture wars – Monuments erected on the Stadtschloss are an ‘infiltration’ of the city and its skyline by nationalists, say critics.

“It appears that we are dealing with a targeted infiltration of the Berlin palace by fundamentalist rightwingers who want to turn it into symbol of a Christian and thereby ‘white’ ethnic Germany.”

Almost 70% of Germans supportive of Hamas attack on Israel

More than two-thirds (69%) of Germans consider Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel to have been justified in view of the many civilian casualties, according to the results of a new survey published on Friday.

Or something like that. I forget the details.

Of 1,296 people polled for the ZDF broadcaster, 87% also said the West should exert more pressure on Israel to improve the supply of food and medicine to the population in the Gaza Strip. Only 7% did not agree with this statement.
